Affirmations
‘Affirmation’ is simply a fancy word for saying nice things to yourself so that you realise they are true. The way affirmations work is that when out brain can’t make sense of something or believe it but is getting the message over and over again, it is forced to find a way to make sense. This either comes from shifting away from the messages and avoiding them, or alternatively, believing them. This is why postive self-talk is so important.
One great approach is to get some window chalk (or something similar that can be washed off) and write on your mirror, a simple but power affirmation that you can read each time you look in the mirror or hang out in your room and notice it. It might go something like this. Feel free to choose the words you need to hear and believe.
I am strong.
I am courageous.
I am ready to try.
I am brave enough to fail.
I am kind enough to forgive myself.
I love myself.
I love who I am.
I am beautiful.
I am smart.
I am caring.
I am grateful,
And am ready to grow from any challenges that come my way.
Below are a mix of videos with some powerful affirmations for you to choose from; a song, meditation and even a slam poem. If you watch the slam poem, be sure to watch it all the way to the end to hear the message being shared.
Another way affirmations can be used, is as a reminder that difficult feelings do pass. A friend of mine once reminded me of this when I was struggling and it is something I now remember and think about if I am feeling anxious or a bit sad.
A lady called Janelle created temporary tattoos with affirmations to remind herself of this - and sold them for a while to help other people remember too. These were hand made with messages such as "breathe", "you are loved" and "I will feel better". While Janelle is not selling these anymore on her Etsy store, you could always design, make (and possibly even sell) your own stick on affirmations by drawing or printing them onto temporary tattoo paper or sticker paper.

Affirmations for Teenagers
Here is an example of some affirmations to read aloud to yourself. You may like to make your own list - or even better - create a video of them like this to share for others to use too. Reading affirmations aloud regularaly helps change the way you think and feel about yourself. One powerful affirmation is “I am enough”. Marisa Peer recommends writing this on all your mirrors (with the exception of vehicles!), with lipstick or something else cleanable so you don’t get into trouble! |
